So you take off your makeup, cleanse regularly, use non-comedogenic  products, but you’re still breaking out. Sometimes, the culprits that cause breakouts are habits not typically associated with skincare. The number one factor that’s often overlooked? Germs. If the proper steps aren’t taken, makeup and skincare products can become breeding grounds for bacteria. To keep your beauty routine germ-free follow the five tips below.

Wash Your Hands

This may seem like an obvious step, but it’s easy to forget to give your hands a good scrub before touching your face or your products. Dipping a dirty finger in moisturizer before application is a sure-fire way for germs to spread.

Throw Out Expired Products

Did you know that skincare and makeup products can expire? Most products have an expiration date stamped onto their packaging, but if it doesn’t, be sure to note the date you opened the product. Write that date on the bottle in black marker as a reminder to toss it out after about one year, depending on the type of product. Take note the smell and texture of your products — if something doesn’t seem right, you’re better off tossing it.

Wipe Your Lips

Before applying any lip product, you should wipe your lips first because bacteria loves to hang out there. If you don’t wipe your lips, bacteria may transfer to the product container, where it can continue to live and grow. It’s also a good idea to stay away from sharing lipsticks or lip balms with others, too.

Wash Your Makeup Brushes

If you don't already, it's time to start washing your makeup brushes and sponges at least once a week with either a mild soap or a brush cleanser, like the NYX On The Spot Makeup Brush Cleaner Spray. It’s also a good idea to designate certain brushes for specific products. If you don’t properly take care of your brushes, you risk transferring germs from one product to another, and ultimately, your face when you apply makeup.

Swipe Your Cell Phone

No, we don’t mean swiping through your favorite social media app, we mean wiping down your phone before holding it to your face to make a call. Cellphones are breeding grounds for bacteria and can cause pimples to pop up around your chin or jawline if not cleaned often.
