How Often Should You Get a Facial?
October 28, 2021Facials are luxurious, relaxing and offer many benefits for your skin. If you’re new to the concept, you may be wondering what exactly a facial is, what to expect from a facial treatment and how often you should get one. To help us explain, we reached out to Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City and Skincare.com consultant. Now that spas across the country are up and running, there’s no better time to read up on the 411 of getting a facial.
What Is a Facial?
A facial is a spa treatment performed by an esthetician, either in-office or at a spa. It is designed to treat skin concerns like blemishes, signs of aging, dehydration and more. Your esthetician or facialist can give you the best advice on which facial will suit your needs.
What Are the Benefits of Getting a Facial?
There are plenty of benefits to getting a facial. One of the biggest is that facials can help deep clean your skin. When done by a professional, facial extractions can help remove debris and gunk residing in your pores. Facials often include an element of exfoliation as well, which can help reveal brighter, more radiant-looking skin.
Another benefit of facials has to do with relaxation. Facialists often expose clients’ skin to steam (to help dislodge pore impurities) and massage the face. Because feeling stressed can impact the look of your skin, taking an hour out of your schedule every few months for a facial is just another way you can unwind and pamper yourself in the name of self-care.
How Often Should You Get a Facial?
Now that you know what a facial is and how it can benefit your skin, it’s time to talk maintenance. Most skincare experts will suggest getting a facial once per month or once per season, depending on your skin needs. “Much like a massage, facials should be thought of as skin maintenance in addition to your daily skincare routine,” Dr. Bhanusali says. “A gentle facial every month is fine, but you don’t need a harsh, overly-aggressive facial over and over.”
