These Are the Signs That It’s Time to Switch to a More Moisturizing Skincare Routine, According to a Derm

There are plenty of factors that can cause your skin to change, even when you think you’ve got your skincare routine down to a science. Changes in weather, dips in hormones, and even proximity to an AC unit can dry out your skin or increase sebum production, trigger breakouts and generally stress out your complexion. To keep up with your skin’s changes, we asked Skincare.com consulting expert, Dr. Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand, a Dallas, Texas-based, board-certified dermatologist, to share the signs to look for  to switch to a more moisturizing skincare routine

What are some signs it’s time to transition to a more moisturizing skincare routine?

“One of the most important things in choosing your skincare is to listen to your skin,” says Dr. Houshmand. “If your skin feels dry, or you start to notice redness or fine lines, these can all be signs that your skin’s barrier is affected. Our skin barrier is what protects our skin. Stress, pollution, climate, indoor and outdoor heating and cooling can all affect this, so you need to add hydration based on these factors.”

Most people associate dry skin with the fall and winter months, but according to Dr. Housmand, it’s not just the temperature drop that could make your skin dry. “Sudden changes in weather, along with lifestyle changes as it gets cooler, such as hot showers and using central heat, contribute to the dryness and inflammation associated with this transitional period,” she says.

How can you add more moisture to your skincare routine?

As with any skincare routine, you should layer your products from thinnest to thickest. In a moisturizing skincare routine, that means serum, lotion, cream and ointment, says Dr. Houshmand. “In the morning, you can use an all-over facial serum and layer it with a cream,” she says. We recommend the It Cosmetics Bye Bye Lines Hyaluronic Acid Serum, which is formulated to help retain your skin barrier’s moisture. If wrinkles and texture are a concern, the Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Anti-Aging Face and Neck Cream is deeply nourishing, with vitamin A and hyaluronic acid to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and increase skin elasticity.

Dr. Houshmand also emphasizes the importance of keeping the skin on your body hydrated. If a classic lotion isn’t enough to smooth dry patches, she recommends layering on something richer, such as the CeraVe Healing Ointment, especially on the knees, elbows, feet and lips.
