From Dermaplaning to Snake Massage: 7 Scary-Sounding Beauty Treatments from Around the Globe

From the scary side effects of party store Halloween makeup to a collection of our most frightening (and most embarrassing!) skin care stories, with Halloween just around the corner, the Skincare.com team is embracing all things spooky. Next up, we’re sharing a collection of scary-sounding beauty treatments.

What Is Dermaplaning, Exactly

Dermaplaning

Editor Warning: This skin care service only sounds scary! Dermaplaning—which should only be done by a trained pro—is the technical name for using 10-gauge scalpel to gently (and oh-so-carefully) shave the surface of your skin. We share everything you need to know about dermaplaning—including its benefits—here!

Snake Massage

A spa massage is undoubtedly one of the most relaxing experiences a gal can have. The dim lighting, the soothing music, the expert therapist working out all the knots. Now, replace that expert therapist with three to six giant slithering snakes and well…relaxing isn’t the first word that comes to mind. What’s more? Certain locations in Asia that offer the menu item do so with Burmese pythons. That’s enough to scare even the bravest skin care aficionado!

Fire Dusting

In Brazil having long, luscious locks is basically a way of life. To keep their hair long and looking healthy, some women seek out salons that can dust off those dead ends…with fire!

Chinese Fire Therapy

Getting hot yet? You ain’t heard nothing yet! Based on the ancient belief that burning fire on the skin’s surface helps to balance yin and yang—and apparently help with wrinkles and dull complexions—Chinese Fire Therapy involves soaking a towel in a blend of herbs and alcohol and placing in on the body. Sounds harmless, no? WRONG. The towel is then lit and then put out with a second towel. We’ll take a rain check…forever.

Vampire Facials

This in-office treatment involves first getting blood taken. Then, the platelet-rich plasma is extracted and turned into a completely personalized injection. Modern day celebs may have made vampire facials all the rage, but if you’re squeamish around blood you may want to pass!

Bird Poop Facials

Yes you read that right…bird poop. There are some spas that  feature facials on their menu that employ nightingale droppings which are slathered all over your face in the name of better-looking skin.

Chemical Peel

Chemical peel…the words can strike fear in even the biggest skin care addicts. While you may be imagining layers of skin peeling off your face, know this: chemical peels aren’t actually all that scary. Many of these in-office exfoliation beauty treatments utilize alpha-hydroxy acids (derived from fruit) and require no downtime. Get the full low down on chemical peels, here!
